The actor’s demo reel and how to make it great!

For most professions a well crafted resume is the crucial elemnt in getting your foot in the door and scoring an interview. For the aspring actor that resume is actually their demo reel. This one to two minute piece must present them in just the right light to the harried and short-on-time casting director or producer now wading through dozens of other reels to find the best fit for the show.

Needless to say you don’t want to give them any reason to say “no” but only have a few seconds to get them to say “yes”…or, at least, “I want to see more of this person”:-) Let’s make the assumption that you have great clips to put on that reel. Unfortunately so does your competition…so what’s the remaining variable you can control here? PRESENTATION and FORMAT!

So how do you make this easiest for your viewer? Well, I just got a chance to read Harper Mitchell’s new book on editing your reel and it’s too succinct and information packed not to be on every actor or editor’s “must read” list. It’s worth every minute of your time and will definitely help you present in the best manner possible.
